Homestyle Try #3

So, this was homemade bibimbap #3 since getting stone(ware) bowls for Christmas. Try #1 was very successful, but not much crunch. Try #2 was good, but a little more utilitarian, a kind of quick dinner. Try #3 started with high ambitions, but fell short in execution.

We had some gosari (fern) leftover from bindaetteok, and I stopped at Mom's House, a local Asian market and picked up some bean sprouts, some fantastic spinach... and because I couldn't resist, mustard greens. I thought there was zucchini and cucumbers at home, but I was wrong, there were only two sad carrots.

So part of my problem was one of vision. I became distracted and could not envision what the end product would look like. I started the spinach, then decided to cook the mustard greens with the spinach, but they take longer... so the spinach was too soft.... the bean sprouts didn't blanch long enough and tasted a bit bitter and raw... and we didn't cut the gosari short enough so it was a little awkward to eat.

On the plus side, I got one bowl hot enough to elicit decent crunch. So there was that. We made too much of most everything in my zeal to make up for a lack of vision... but I'm afraid all the pieces are what make the whole, and when the pieces don't quite work, then the whole reflects that. It was still a tasty hearty meal... just more a bowl of mixed things than something worthy of praise and nostalgia.

Clearly, more research is necessary.
